On the Way into Walla Walla -Waterbrook

2015-10-04 at 11-19-07

One of my favorite first stops on the way into Walla Walla is Waterbrook. They have the most gorgeous tasting room and outdoor space. Even if their wines weren’t as good as they are it would be worth the stop.

The interior is gorgeous with art and high-ceilings. Lots of windows overlook the outdoor space. Pick a gorgeous day to visit so that you can sit in front of the outdoor fireplace or overlook the pond. They have great landscaping.

During the several times we have visited the staff has always been super friendly and accommodating. I always enjoy the reserve tasting more than the regular one. The Reserve Merlot and Reserve Malbec have become staples in our wine cellar.

We have browsed the menu but never eaten there except at special events. At that time the food was excellent. I have had friends tell me that they love their burgers and salmon salad. Next visit, in October, we will give it a try.

Nice Winery Near the City

Recently I went back to my hometown of Rochester, NY and one of my girlfriends took me to Casa Larga Winery in nearby Victor NY. They have a cute tasting room that is very convenient to Eastview Mall. At the time of our visit they were offering 5 wine tastes for $4 and tastes of their “special” wines for $1 each.

casalarga1

Our wine steward was Meghan. She was very sweet but not very knowledgeable. She told us she had been pouring wine at Casa Larga for about a week. She also told us her mom worked in the office and that was the reason she was working there.

So without much to go on we jumped into tasting. Lilac Hill is one of their most popular wines especially around the Lilac Festival.  I found it to be very sweet with a finishing note of “bubble gum”. The Vidal Blanc is one of their best sellers and I think it would be a good accompaniment to a lunchtime salad.

My favorite wine was their Meritage at $21.99 per bottle. It was a bit dry but has a nice berry finish.

The tasting room is nice and you can also purchase chocolates or a cheese plate to compliment your tasting experience. They offer several special events such as Cabin Fever Thursdays in the winter and Patio Parties in the summer.

The location makes it a perfect diversion – near the city and near the mall. It is a great way to spend a couple of hours.

Tamarack Cellars – Walla Walla

images

Located in a large “garage-style” space with a huge overhead door that opens to bring in the outdoors, Tamarack Cellars was a pleasant stop on our recent wine tasting tour. Founded in 1998 by Ron and Jamie Coleman, Tamarack’s goal was to make consistent, hand-crafted wines at a reasonable price. Judging from our recent visit,I would say that they have done just that.

On the afternoon we visited, Boone poured for us. Casual in a ball cap, shorts and tennis shoes, he was no nonsense but still friendly and personable and VERY knowledgeable about the wine he was pouring.

imgresTwo noteworthy tastes were the Firehouse Red at $16 / bottle. This is a terrific “Tuesday Wine”. Since our tasting I have found this wine on several restaurant menus and have not been disappointed. The other wine that we all gravitated toward was Spicebox. As the name suggests, a very spicy wine made with a mix of Grenache, Mouvedre and Counoise (a new varietal for me).

I would definitely recommend a stop at Tamarack Cellars on your Walla Walla wine tasting. Be sure to look for Maisie, their very own wine dog.

Figgins Family Wine October Release Party

The Figgins' Family Wine Release Party was held on Saturday.

On Saturday, October 3rd Figgins held their annual Fall Release Party and they did not disappoint. This was our third year attending (we have begun to reschedule our October trip to Maui around it) and I believe this was their best event yet.

The event was held in the vineyard. We drove up a winding and somewhat dusty road and then made our way through the vineyards. Each row has a vertical slab of Stone at the end and the effect is lovely. When we reached the highest point in the vineyard. It was nothing short of spectacular. We had a crystal clear blue sky and fantastic views of the rolling wheat fields and the Blue Mountains beyond.

The Figgins Family was pouring tastes of their Riesling paired with a shrimp skewer and a bruschetta with white bean dip. The Walla Walla Estate Red Wine. (I think this Red is their best yet!) was paired with a pulled pork bruschetta with a skewer of butternut squash and mushroom. It was all delicious.

Aaron Lee Tasian from Nashville kept the party rocking.

To top off this low-key party on the lawn Chris Figgins brought in Nashville “Indy Folk Grit” artist Aaron Lee Tasjan. His combination of storytelling and hot guitar tunes had everyone captivated.

One Wine – Exceptional Wine

One Wine has a sleek and modern tasting room in downtown Chelan.

One Wine has a sleek and modern tasting room in downtown Chelan.

Last weekend was my second visit to One Wine in Chelan. This visit was just as terrific as the previous one. The tasting room is very different than most tasting rooms. Located in downtown Chelan (I think they are the only one downtown) there are no murals of rolling grape vines or plastic grapes hanging from the doorways. It is sleek and modern and gorgeous. There is also a terrific patio beside the building where the four of us kicked back and enjoyed our wine.

one wine guyThere is not really just one wine, but three. A Bordeaux-style red that is yummy but would benefit from a bit of time in the cellar. A Pinot Gris that I have bought a couple of times and I claim that I don’t like white! And a rose’ which is 70% Cabernet Franc – this was my favorite – again a big surprise as I don’t consider myself a rose person but it is sold out so I am very glad I bought my share on our first visit.

One wine patioJo and Greg, the owners/winemakers, are a lot of fun. On the first visit Greg inscribed our purchased bottles with Ogham inscriptions. It looks very cool and makes each bottle very special. You can visit the One Wine website for a complete description.

On our second visit, Jo broke out her collection of candy – quite impressive – Bit of Honey, Big Hunks, Dove Chocolates and we were able to pair them with our wine. There is a set of treats that comes with each $5 tasting – dark chocolate covered fruit and lemon wafers, but if you get Jo wound up out comes the “big stash” of candy!

one wine candyOne Wine is delicious and fun. It is worth a visit just to see the stylish tasting room, but stay for the great conversation and the award winning wine.

Ventimiglia Cellars – A Hidden Gem in Walla Walla

We are always looking for that hidden gem of a winery that most people don’t know about yet. Must be our pioneer spirit. On a recent visit to Lake Chelan, our friends, Leslie and Chip, took us off the beaten path to discover a wonderful new winery – Ventimiglia Cellars.

It really is off the beaten path, located on Howser Rd behind some fruit storage facilities. You travel down a gravel road complete with chickens and then you are rewarded with this small tasting room. What the tasting room lacks in size is made up for with the winemaker, Ron’s, larger than life personality. We were greeted like old friends and made to feel right at home at the tasting bar. When Leslie found out Shawna (Ron’s wife) wasn’t there, she had Ron call her and invite her over to join the party – which she did.

And what a party it was…. We started by tasting a crisp white Pinot Gris and Viognier blend. But the party really took off for me when we got to the reds. Ron makes a fabulous Bordeaux blend that he calls, “Amalgamarsi”, which in Italian means to unite or meld. It is really delicious. I especially liked the fact that Ron is so knowledgeable about wine-making and eager to share that knowledge. I feel I learned quite a bit listening to his stories.

We also decided that we needed the Merlot and Syrah to go into our cellar. While very drinkable now, they will really shine with a few years of cellaring. We also purchased a bottle of Port. Having been in Portugal earlier this year and making an effort to taste as many ports as possible, this is a big compliment to Ron.

If you are visiting Lake Chelan and want to have a great time tasting, Ventimiglia Cellars, is the place for you. Definitely a boutique winery producing about 250 cases per year, friendly, family owned with lots of warmth and hospitality (and fabulous green olives).

Mille Gratis Ron and Shawna!

Revisiting Obelisco

Obelisco Estates makes so delicious reds

Obelisco Estates makes so delicious reds

Obelisco has always been one of our favorite wineries and was my very first blog in October of 2011. On our first visit, I thought my palate was broken –I loved every single one of their wines. That never happens to me. I came back a second time and such delicious reds, I had to join their wine club. We continued drinking a lot of Obelisco wine and even had my husband’s birthday party at the Woodinville tasting room.

Obelisco had their first vintage in 2007 and opened their tasting room in 2010. A lot has changed over the past few years. We recently stopped by for a tasting and the wines are still just as delicious as I remembered. However, the tasting room itself is a very different experience. The tasting room was really crowded and there was a real lack of personal attention.

The "Barrel Room" at Obelisco is used for parties, private tastings and other events.

A small display outlined the current wine club membership. It is also a very different club than we had joined years ago and also had a “waiting list” stamped across it. The first two years the wine club had its annual event at the Gig Harbor home of Doug Long, one of the winery’s founders as well as Manny’s Brisket on select Friday nights. The current club membership includes a Gala Dinner that felt stuffy from the description.

I think it is always interesting to see how local wineries handle growth. From the crowd that was there the day we visited a ot of people enjoy Obelisco wine and must also like the new feel of the tasting room. My personal preference is for something a bit more laid back and personal.

Smasne Cellars

Smasne 1

Smasne Cellars is one of the favorite wineries of my friend Raye, so I have done several tastings here. Always a good choice, Smasne has a great range of wines from $14 Tuesday wines to a $110 special occasion bottle of 2010 Robert O Smasne Owens Reserve.

Smasne Cellars has a tasting room located in Woodinville.

Smasne Cellars has a tasting room located in Woodinville.

The Woodinville tasting room is always a good time. On the day we visited Jeff and Tracey were pouring. A really fun couple that are very knowledgeable about both the wine and the winery. A large space in the winery warehouse district of Woodinville includes a really long tasting bar so there is room for everyone. There are also plenty of tables and chairs – perfect for relaxing and enjoying the wine.

Robert O. Smasne, the winemaker, graduated from Washington State University and then began his career at Covey Run Winery with David Lake of Columbia Winery fame. From there he went on to Amavi Cellars and Alexandria Nicole Cellars. In 2006 he started his own winery.

On our most recent visit, we really enjoyed Ancient Rocks, a wonderful blend of Mourvedre and Grenache. We also picked up a case of Bunkhouse Red, a really versatile everyday wine. We also still have some ½ Ass Red in our cellar

In addition to a very large assortment of wines and winemaking styles Smasne Cellars is a great place to visit. Fun people, a nice atmosphere and wine to suit most tastes – I definitely would recommend a visit.

Hard Row to Hoe is a Fun Time in Chelan

My friend, Leslie, has been telling me how good the wines are in Chelan. I hadn’t been there in over ten years but could not even remember seeing a winery when I was there. So, as always, I was excited to try something new and something different. She recommended “A Hard Row to Hoe”.

Hard Row to Hoe

Hard Row to Hoe

This is such a fun place. I don’t want to say too much and spoil all the fun. When you go, you must ask for the story of how the winery got its’ name. I will give you a hint – it has something to do with an enterprising man in the 1930’s with a row boat who started a taxi service on Lake Chelan to take the lonely miners to a brothel across the bay at Point Lovely.
The winery doesn’t take itself too seriously. From the x-rated wallpaper to the red sofa where you can don a feather boa and have your photo taken – this is a must visit for a good time.

Even their wines carry on the theme with names like: “Good in Bed”, After noon Delight” and “Seduction Red” – this was my favorite with a blend of Malbec, Primitivo and Merlot – it was delicious. They also had a Petit Verdot that I really enjoyed.
The Tasting Room is warm and friendly.

On a second visit the winery was featuring a throw-back to Woodstock. They had a very fun band and were serving wine and snacks and people had blankets out on the lawn. It was a very enjoyable time.
Checking their website their sense of humor continues through Crush in October when they feature “Live Nude Grapes”. Everything is tongue and cheek, the wine is good and the winemaker and all her staff are interesting and fun. This is a definite visit.

Efeste was a “Final Final” Visit for Me

A good friend of mine recently discovered a reasonably priced wine that she really liked. It is called “Final Final” from Efeste. Since we were heading to her home for dinner, we made a quick stop by the Woodinville tasting room to pick her up a bottle and check out their other wines.
wine
The tasting room is roomy and attractively decorated. We were met at the door by a cashier who “checked us in”. We proceeded to the tasting bar and eventually did our tasting on some comfy sofas.
The wine was good. The tastes were quite small especially considering the tasting fee is charged unless you spend a minimum amount or purchase multiple bottles. The atmosphere was a bit different than most tasting rooms I have visited. The winemaker’s (?) mother was badgering a couple sitting across from us to join the wine club. It was obvious this young couple was extremely uncomfortable with her pushiness. My friend had also asked if we could see what the case discount was (she really did like this wine) and I was surprised that there is no volume discount. The only discount offered is for club members. The cashier was a bit snippy as she told me this.
I would recommend enjoying a glass of Efeste wine at a restaurant or wine bar and visiting a tasting room that is more relaxed and more fun. There are so many in Woodinville that this one did not make sense for us to plan a return visit.
