Last weekend we took a pleasant ferry ride across Puget Sound and met some friends at Whidbey Island Winery. It felt like a warm, welcoming cottage set in the middle of an apple orchard. We were a group of 12 and felt a little like we had taken the tasting room by storm. There was also a bachlorette party celebrating on the patio.
The tasting was fun. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and we were able to taste several wines that you don’t often see in Washington Wineries. These included a Lemberger, a Cabernet Franc varietal, and a Primitivo with grapes grown in Horse Heaven Hills.
I personally found a couple of well-priced summer white wines to take home and a case of mixed reds. Several people in our group left with several bottles and a promise to come back and visit soon.
Whidbey Island Winery is certainly on my “recommendation list” to people who want to experience a mini vacation. It feels like a little slice of Walla Walla only a short ferry ride away.
